WAVES Storms Europe and Becomes WTG
After two successful events in Paris, one of which the Japanese-American producer starRo and Tokyo rapper crew kiLLa delivered memorable performances, the WAVES project has taken off and become WTG. Born in 2017 from a union between ASICS and UNRTD™, WAVES’s mission is to shed light on the Japanese underground music scene through bold evening functions.
Initially intended for just the French capital, WTG is now international and will be available throughout Europe. For this specific occasion, WTG’s visual identity has evolved. A culmination made up of the Swiss designers Xavier Monney, Anthony Velen and Kenny Brandenberger, the event’s new kinetic identity is inspired by the Japanese typography KATAKANA as well as the monochromatic and minimalist treatment specific to Swiss contemporary designs. This new presentation immediately confronts Japanese and Western cultures through it’s various touchpoints.
Music, digital arts and sneakers: a 360° dive into Japanese culture
For the first edition of WTG, which will be held on June 20th at the ASICS House Paris, Japanese rappers Hiyadam and JP THE WAVY will be in the spotlight. After their recent collaboration on the hard-hitting "Wakaranai", these two artists are considered the new faces of Japanese hip-hop. Although the evening will be heavily influenced by Japanese hip-hop and soul 2.0, there will also be an exclusive performance from Crayon, a prominent member of the French label Roche Musique, as well as the Franco-Canadian duo HAUTE, whose futuristic R'n'B has fascinated those far beyond just France.
In addition to music, which remains the core of this ambitious initiative, each WTG event will now feature an interactive digital arts experience, a result of a collaboration with design and engineering studio ExperiensS. For its first edition in Paris, WTG will present an exploration of a sneaker model that has marked the giant's history, ASICS’s iconic GELSAGA OG. Created in the 1990s, this retro silhouette was originally designed for running, but is now experiencing a renaissance for lifestyle wear thanks to it's sleek design and several new and original colors.
