It’s been a good minute now of wasting away from the lack of Ruff Ryders in our lives. I don’t think I can even remember the last time I bellowed “Ride Or Die!” Since the band’s demise musically in 2010, we have been pining for some of the hard-hitting beats and the brash approach to hip hop that is unique to the collective. While the record company was founded by Joaquín “Waah” Dean, Darin “Dee” Dean and Chivon Dean, uncles of Swizz Beatz, the faces of that East Coast subculture, which thrived during the late ’90s/early 2000s, were unequivocally Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, The LOX (all of which became multiplatinum artists for Def Jam Records), female rap superstar Eve, and of course beat master Swizz Beatz himself.
Thanks to London-based Local Action Records (known for housing the names of Dawn, Deadboy, Jammz and Lil JaBBA, to name a few), we waste away we no longer, as they have just released a two solid hour mix of nothing but Ruff Ryders dubbed “100% Ruff Ryders.” The playlist appeared on LAR’s Soundcloud page as part of the label’s Radar Radio program. While the playlist is predominantly RR hits from 1997 to 2002, the set goes way deeper than that, having unearthed a few gems that even the most seasoned Ruffian would have never heard before. Listen to the full mix above, and better yet, download it all for free from the player.
