Jake Lee Creates a Whole New World with Surreal Collages
Jake Lee is more than just a collage artist, he is a world collider. In his vibrant mashups of images from magazines and illustrations, the South Korean art talent alters the viewers’ perceptions of reality with his philosophy-challenging creativity. Lee’s collection of surreal imagery fuses unrelated scenery and events into a final, fantastical masterpiece. Inspired by 1950’s graphics, his colorful artworks turn conventional ideas on their heads in order to express a beautifully bizarre depiction of the world as we know it.
Dreams really do come true when you’re the narrator of your own world, and Lee is certainly the boss of his collage work. Each piece plays up aspects of his lived social, political, and environmental experiences in a unique display of what could be. From the vivid color choices down to the contrasting subject matter, he takes what may be considered familiar and gives it a never-before-seen twist. As his artist statement best explains, “Appearing to work with opposites (warm and cool, calm and chaos), Lee interrogates the boundary between disarray and harmony, accompanied by vivid forms assisting in the making of dreamlike world, incomprehensible to be seen in reality yet redolent of our own environment.” So go ahead and embark on this visual adventure by checking out some of Lee’s work below and heading to his Insta to further blow your mind.
