“What if you had the power to decide who lives and who dies?” That’s the tagline to the upcoming live-action adaptation of the Japanese cult hit Manga (written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata) turned Anime, Death Note. For those unfamiliar with the story, Death Note follows villain/protagonist Light Yagami, who stumbles upon a black notebook–a Death Note–that was dropped by a Shinigami, or “death spirit” called Ryuk, out of boredom, looking to shake things up within the mortal world. The book allows the owner to write the name of anyone they want into it, sealing that person’s fate… which of course if death.
With the original anime series already hosted on Netflix, the television network has stepped it up another notch by bringing to its fans a live-action adaptation that will see the original Blair Witch’s Director Adam Wingard at its helm. The one-minute trailer for the upcoming flick reveals Nat Wolff (of Paper Towns fame) as main character Light Yagami, and Get Out star Keith Stanfield as L–the story’s world-famous detective and counterpart to Yagami–much of the narrative in Death Note revolves around their unique and precarious relationship. Check out the trailer in the jump above, and join us as we wait for the Netflix release to come August 25, where we can see how it holds up to the original 2006 Japanese live adaptation by Shūsuke Kaneko, which you can check out above.
