As if big wave surfing wasn’t daunting enough, surf filmmaker Kylian Castells puts out this hauntingly captivating mini film that paints Portugal’s Nazaré town and its renown big wave as a behemoth current of doom. The dark and moody, monochromatic aesthetic, the tight shots and art direction which comes in thanks to Hector Menendez, and the ethereal soundtrack of Dark Jazz Trio’s “Daydream Nation” makes Castells’ “Black Carnival” much more than just a big wave surfing video. It also serves to bring a little faith back into a big wave destination that has unfortunately succumb to its oversaturated popularity.
