An Exhibition Honoring Female Photography Game-Changers
While there are an abundance of female image-takers killing the game in the contemporary photography world, they aren’t always given the spotlight. Often underrepresented in the commercial and professional photographic realms, talented women in the industry were recently chosen as the stars of Picfair’s contest-turned-showcase. Held at London’s The Guardian News and Media Gallery, Women Behind the Lens began as a competition held by the stock image library to encourage equal representation within the vast sphere of professional photography. After sifting through the countless top-notch artists, the winners have been chosen and the women-focused exhibition is now open to the public.
Hundreds of applicants from around the globe submitted their best captures of nature, street shots, architecture, and portraiture to take part in the Women Behind the Lens contest. In Picfair’s description of why they put on the show they revealed, “Just 2% of photographers on the books at major commercial agencies are women. Only 5% of the images used by leading photography publishers are from the lenses of female photographers. For every woman ambassador working for the major camera brands, there are 6 men.” With this data in mind, take some time and peep through the following imagery from a few of these badass photo talents and visit the newspaper’s gallery before category winners are announced in January. Can’t make it? Go out and support your local female photographers!
