A Spontaneous Photo Shoot With a Random Tokyo Couple at a ‘Love Hotel’
The title pretty much says it all. While intimate photo shoots that represents our exploration of the subject of sex can often seem posed and planned–seeing as it’s a sensitive subject and all–Dutch photographer Mila van der Linden has a totally different approach to capturing the “Taboo.” i-D magazine describes her method as “spontaneous and impulsive,” which we can add is also organic and refreshing. The way she approaches her shoots is so strike up a conversation with strangers, instantly creating a rapport, then takes it from there. More often than not, these willing participants end up featured in an a raw and incredibly captivating photo series like the one you see before you.
Known for her series that captures the spirit of Los Angeles’ strippers, her current series looks at the sex industry in Japan, where sex is still very much more of a taboo than in other more western societies. Having met the featured couple at a store, Linden booked a room at one of Tokyo’s infamous “Love Hotels,” where she proceeded to capture intimate and artistic scenes that blends both the subjects and the atmosphere around them.
